Take Ten! Involving the Learner
Who Is Learning Online
Three Brain Science Facts to Enhance E-Learning
Take a Guess:
What are the two most powerful tools a learner brings to online learning? Choose one answer:
A. Pen and pencil
B. Body and brain
C. Workbook and other printed materials
Kind of a "no-brainer," huh? Of course you chose Answer B. Learners pay better attention to new content and can remember it longer when both their body and brain are engaged and involved in the learning.

Index Cards as Note-Taking Tools:
Before we explore three concepts from twenty-first century "cognitive neuroscience" (also called "brain science") about engaging the learner's body and brain to enhance learning, you need to do the following:
1. Get 4 index cards (small pieces of paper or post-it notes will do).
2. Label the first one "Pre/Post."
3. Number the others in order: "Brain Science Fact #1, Fact #2, Fact #3."
You will be using these index cards as note-taking tools for this micro-course. Just like the instructions above, you may want to suggest to your online learners that they use index cards to jot down notes too. Why? A few reasons:
* Novelty: The human brain pays more attention to new experiences than routine ones. Using index cards as note-taking tools is new for most learners.
* Interest: Using index cards increases a learner's curiosity about and interest in what will go on the cards or how the cards will be used.
* Movement: Cards are easily moved around, sorted, and manipulated - in brain jargon, a "kinesthetic" learning tool - so the learner is engaging both the body and brain by using cards.
